Title: Ransoms

Notes:

Today the Bishop discussed the importance of giving, not just of money (Fruits of the Spirit). He also discussed Ransoms and that there are two kinds of ransoms: ransom of man, and ransom of scripture. See 1 Timothy 2:5-6. This type of ransom is a price paid for a forfeited life. Jesus owns all of our souls (see Ezekiel 18:4). I didn't come to condemn the world for the world is already condemned. (see John 3:17) We must come to repentance to be delivered (Romans 3:23). Jesus ransomed us from a place of destruction.

Then he further discussed ransoming by discussing Matthew 13:44-46. As his object lesson he chose a member of the congregation and asked them what price would you pay for this pearl. Your bank account? Your house? Your car? what if these weren't enough? Would you be willing to give up your family or even your own life to get this pearl. A question we should all take to heart. Why a pearl? Jesus didn't use a diamond which has more worth because a diamond can be broken and still have worth. A pearl on the other hand is worthless once it is broken. Are you willing to forfeit your life for Jesus? He also pointed out that we should take up our cross daily and deny ourselves (Luke 9:23) as well as be willing to lay down our lives for our brethren (1 John 3:16). He brought up that this was 1 John but wanted to know if anyone had John 3:16 memorized (do you know 3:16 off the top of your head? It's a great one to know!). The price for this type of ransom is Jesus Christ, His life, His blood, and our lives. We need to remember we are worth quite a bit or else Jesus wouldn't have been so willing to give up His life for ours.

Title: Maturing Disciples

Notes:

Today Pastor Benjamin talked about Maturing Disciples. Maturing comes not from wishful thinking but rather you must get yourself into it.

He talked about the effects of the gospel and that one will not enjoy the benefits of knowing Christ without the gospel. Gospel is the power of God (see Romans 1:16) It has the power to change lives. Believe and be changed. The truth will set you free.

Salvation is not just about the forgiveness of sins, it also has to do with freedom from oppression from the enemy. (Colossians 1:12-13) Salvation is not just being saved from sin, but being delivered from oppression from the devil. Everyone who walks with God should not be afraid.

Power of God? (Romans 1:16) Revelation of righteousness without the law is revealed (Romans 3:21). For God to heal and deliver you there must be a personal relationship. (Romans 1:17) Righteousness of God is revealed from faith - this gives everyone access to God - it is no longer just the Israelite that has this access. For instance, the gentiles were not required to be circumcised in order gain access to this.

Righteousness without the law? (Romans 3:21 again) We are talking about the law of Israel. Except where told otherwise in the New Testament, we no longer need to celebrate the feasts, these were rituals that were looking towards the coming of Christ. (side note: Christ tells us to remember the Passover so this would be an example of the old laws that translate into the New Testament).

He then discussed Pentecost (Acts 2:1) coming after the wave offering (Leviticus 23:15 and Deuteronomy 16:9) and having to do with the harvest. The Holy Ghost is a reality - God poured out his spirit on Pentecost. (Acts 20:16) Pentecost is celebrated in Israel, even up to this day. It is a time when everyone who is Jewish is gathered together. When the Pentecost came, they didn't experience what they used to experience (Acts 2:2) rather they found a new way to worship - righteousness without the law. (Acts 2:3-5) Everybody who was part of the Jewish nation came together at this time in Jerusalem (Acts 2:6-8) and everyone heard them speak in their own language and accused them of being drunk (Acts 2:14-15) but this was prophecy that was spoke of from the book of Joel (Acts 2:16) (side note: the receiving of the Holy Ghost).

Righteousness Revealed - how? (Colossians 1:4) By faith in Christ Jesus (gives us an assurance of salvation - not just the power to heal sickness). The strongest and most characteristic part of a child of God is their faith in Christ Jesus. Trust God for everything, faith is in Jesus.

The apostles' doctrine (Acts 2:42) needs to be taught daily. Everyday they are learning about Jesus (Acts 5:42). The best treasure we've ever had is Christ.Need to read your bible daily. You can't be strong in faith if you don't have the knowledge of Jesus. (side note: we get this knowledge by studying the bible, and attending church) (Daniel 11:32) For those that know their God will be strong. If you have faith in Christ (Colossians 1:4) you will not be moved by the challenges of life. (Ephesians 1:15) If you are going to overcome troubles and challenges in life, your faith should be in Christ.

In Acts 3:1-4 the disciples look on a man who was begging and said Look on us (Acts 3:5-7) they had no money but they gave the man the ability to walk because of faith in Jesus Christ. (Acts of Apostles 20:32) The gospel builds you up, edifies you. The Word of His Grace (gospel) builds you up (the inheritance here is authority/power). When you are down, you need to spend time in God's word. (Acts 8:4-5) Teaching people about Christ - not about philosophies of man - but of Christ for Christ gives you the ability to overcome all challenges. (Colossians 1:4) Faith must be in Christ Jesus - this comes from hearing and studying the gospel (side note: this is the importance of attending church and reading/studying the bible daily) - for it's not our possessions that define us but rather our faith.

It is foolish to be envious of the prosperity of the wicked (Psalms 73:1-3). Don't judge your life by the wicked who can go to any lengths to acquire wealth (Psalms 73:4-5). If you are envious you will not see that they are in trouble. God is not unfair. Psalms 73:6-7 talk about the wicked - the indication that you are maturing in God is not how much you have (for the least in the Kingdom is better off than John the Baptist) (2 Thessalonians 1:3) because your faith - not your money grows exceedingly. There are two signs here that you are maturing. One, have faith in Christ and do not allow the things around you dictate your terms of worship. The second sign is your love for your brethren without condition. (Colossians 1:4) Love shouldn't be conditional on what you have but on your faith in Christ (see also Ephesians 1:15). He that does not love, does not see God.

(1 Peter 1:22) Obeying the truth (Gospel) and having faith in Christ, love of the brethren with a pure heart and without anything attached to it. These two things are the signs that someone is growing in Christ (1 Peter 1:23).

Remember: Give God praise no matter what. (side note: we can't just praise things when things are going our way - that is easy - but praise God in ALL things!)

Title: Knowing Who We Are and Who Christ Is

Notes:

In know who Jesus is we find out who we are in Him

Tonight Pastor Benjamin covered the importance of knowing who we are and who Christ is. We can not understand who we are until we know who Jesus is.

The early church only taught one thing. That is that Jesus is the only message of the church. One message - as in the apostle's doctrine (not plural - see Acts 2:42). The apostles didn't teach any other message (Acts 5:42). One message taught daily because our revelation about Jesus defines who we are.

Jesus knew your life would be full of confusion until you know who he is (Matthew 16:15). We can't know him through science or movies. They can't tell us who he is. We can only know him through the revelation of the word. Anytime you have a revelation about Jesus, heaven will focus attention on you (see Matthew 16:16-18). You can't get revelation of Jesus through the things of men (flesh). Why a rock? Rock is the Revelation Of Christ the King. By having understanding of Jesus it changes who you are. Your position in spirit is changed.

1 Peter 2:4 is the revealing of Isaiah 28:16 which was a prophecy about Jesus. The Stone. The foundation of the church is built upon stone/rock which is Jesus Christ - there is no power of hell that can affect your destiny if you have an understanding of Christ.

We talked about Daniel 2:34 which has interpretation in Daniel 2:45. A dream about the Kingdom of God coming - Jesus is represented in the dream as a stone. You also are a lively stome (1 Peter 2:5). This is our identity. If you become a lively stone the devil has no access to you. The people of the world cannot understand you because you are wired differently. Our friends don't understand when we don't want to drink, smoke, and get wild to have a good time. This is not what we need to have a good time and they just don't understand. (1 John 3:1) We are children of God - the world does not see who we are - so don't be mad at them because they don't know. They don't know because they don't understand who Jesus is. Everybody in the world is teaching you a lesson - learn patience and tolerance.

Our revelation of Christ will affect our knowledge of ourselves (1 John 4:17)

Here is your homework: Go and discover who Jesus is so you will know who you are.

A righteous man falls 7 times and continues to get up. As a child of God, Jesus should not be a mystery. Mysteries = secrets (Matthew 13:11) Everyone in the kingdom should be able to understand who he/she is in Christ. If you don't, you will be taken advantage of by the devil. Every child of God has access to this mystery (Colossians 1:27). The mystery is Christ in you!

If Christ is in you, you can't be overcome by the troubles of life. Everything the enemy throws at you, you will overcome because you have Christ in you. If you don't seek God in His Word, you won't get the blessings (Luke 4:22). When your understanding is limited, the enemy can take advantage of you.

Christ is our life. (say it: Christ IS my life!)

If your life is in Christ, you should live a life of victory (Colossians 3:3). Speak to your mountains. And don't speak negative things (Philemon 1:6). Every good thing which is in you is in Christ Jesus. There is victory in you. Don't let the negative things in your life mess you up. Stay positive!

Title: Having a Plan

Notes:

Everyone has something to be thankful for, we serve a powerful God. People can overcome sickness and life's issues and get healthy in the name of of the Lord our God.

We must have a plan (John 1:1-13) and that plan is the plan of God. From the time man fell in the garden, God had a plan for our salvation. The falling brought us away from God, but He had a plan to bring us back to Him.

A Child of God knows they are going to get through difficult times. But it's imperative that we have a plan (a method of accomplishing an objective). We are never going to be what we can be unless we get on God's plan for us. There are so many plans out there these days, but there is only one plan that can truly save us. We must put God first.

He shall direct your path (Proverbs 3:6). God is always there for us. In all ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. Satan sets stumbling blocks to block our way. We can only overcome by trusting in God and letting him direct our path.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord (Psalms 37:23). We are talking about the plan of God here.

We have to have a plan when going to war (Luke 14:31), you have to have a strategy. In our walk with God we have a plan to fight the war (side note: we are constantly in spiritual warfare for our salvation - the devil wants to destroy that which God plants in our heart). I want to be blessed and successful in all I do. Trust in God that we can get through. But we must make peace first.

Put God first and get on the plan which will get us though all our difficulties. In Luke 12:16-21, God called the man a fool because he did everything to be successful (materialistically) but he wasn't on God's plan.

Always remember you need a plan and that is the plan of God. You are not going to get a free ticket into the kingdom of God. Receive that which the Lord has given to us and let that lift us up (Psalms 52:7). (side note: don't be brought down or lose your salvation because of materialism). We are not living on our own, but by the blessings of God.

Your testimony will speak for you when you give your life to God and follow his plan. We must make God our plan because that will help us in our time of need. We shall receive the blessings from the Lord (Psalms 24:5) but we must seek the face of God in whatever life brings us. You will be able to get through all of your issues because you are a child of God.

Remember the parable of the sower. There was the seeds that fell by the wayside (Matthew 13:4). If we let our seeds fall by the wayside, the devil will come to take our seeds away. We must not let anyone come into our life which will steal the seed which is sown in our heart. There are so many things God wants to do for us, open doors for us, but we must stay on the plan of God.

Thank God for what he has done. For what he has done in your life. Believe on his name (John 1:9). It is His will that we be saved (2 Peter 3:9). He is committed to helping us be delivered (2 Corinthians 5:19) so we should be on His path.

Follow-up presented by: Benjamin D. Arazu

The plan you choose will affect your decisions. Without a plan your new year resolutions will fail. How many of us have attempted to make resolutions only to have them fail by January 15th. Trust in God. Be on his plan and you can be successful.

God has a plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11). If you don't have a plan for your life then the enemy will take advantage of you. If you don't have a plan, the devil will give you one. God is thinking about you. He has a plan for you. He has only thoughts of peace for you. Not of evil, but of peace. Notice that this is thoughts of peace - plural, not singular. He doesn't just have a thought of peace for you, but many. There is an expected end. God is going to make a way for you and reach out to you.

Regarding prayer (Jeremiah 29:12), your attitude in approaching God must be positive or you will not be able to pray effectively. You must have high expectations of God. If our prayers are ineffective it is because we don't treat God as something to write home about. (side note: But he is and as a child of God you should believe he is a great and powerful God whose plan is to get us out of trouble.)

January 2017 - 21 days of Fasting and Prayer

Daniel 10 has a 21 day plan for us for fasting. Eat nothing cooked (Daniel 10:2-3), but enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. And plenty of water.

Esther also tells us how to fast for three days. Eat or drink nothing for three days (Esther 4:16) (side note - if you are new to fasting you should continue to drink water).

Jesus emphasized payer and fasting (Matthew 17:21) to rebuke the evil spirits. Fasting and prayer is not meant to be a bride to God but rather the fasting will help our prayers be more effective.

Reminders were given during service that January 31st is our Love Feast and all are welcome and all are welcome to bring friends. Please bring a dish to pass, but if you can't come anyway.

Title: Study the Word Daily

Notes:

Study the word daily was the way Brother Benjamin started out tonight's lesson. Before hitting the street look at the reality of Christ... and what we can do through Him. Our mind should be renewed every day according to God's plan.

There is something significant about the name of Jesus (Acts 5:40) that the pharisees were afraid of. Daily the apostles taught and talked about Jesus (Acts 5:41-42). God, through the apostles, wants us to understand our identity. For God to give us grace again and for us to be redeemed, we must know our identity.

Every man born under the sun lost the image (Genesis 1:26). Among humans, only Adam was made in an image of God. Adam was the first image God created (Genesis 2:7). It was planned that Adam would live for eternity. God created the garden and put Adam into it. At this point, Adam was still an image of God because he was obeying the principles of God.

God had created rules for Adam to follow (Genesis 2:16) and He told Adam something along the lines you need to obey me. After Adam sinned, he was no longer an image of God. The image of God cannot sin. He lost the image because he became imperfect and unrighteous.

Adam begot a son in his own likeness (Genesis 5:1-3). This was an image of sin. It was a polluted image. Sin polluted the first image. It was no longer the image of God. Before we give our life to Jesus, we are an image of Adam, not of God.

The one that was natural came first (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). The spiritual one came second. Anyone that has not asked Jesus to forgive his sins is still with the first Adam. We are not automatically born righteous just because our parents might be. When you become an image of God, you are a NEW Adam through Jesus. God did not recreate the first Adam. We need to switch over from the image of the first Adam to that of the second by being obedient to God. You will not inherit the kingdom of God if you remain in the image of the first Adam. So the question becomes: How can we become like the image of the heavenly one? The answer is simple. By being obedient to the gospel and following the word of God we can become like the second Adam.

If you are in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) you are a new image, not a recreated first Adam. We are not a refurbished version of the first Adam when we ask for forgiveness. We are created in the new (2nd)(heavenly) Adam when we do this. Yes, you probably have a character to work on. That doesn't mean God looks at you like a first Adam. You are complete in God when you make up your mind to obey God. What you need to do is ask for forgiveness and follow the gospel. Give yourself over to Jesus.

If you are not careful, you won't understand why evil thoughts enter your head. You might think you are corrupt. These thoughts happen because we are born in the flesh.

Present your bodies (Romans 12:1-2) and dedicate your time. No one becomes holy over night. Verse 2 tells us how to do this. We need to be constantly looking at the Word of God to renew our minds. When we do this, there are three things we will begin to know and understand:

1) You will understand what is good and what you should do.

2) You will understand what is acceptable before God (it is good to praise God, pay tithes, pray for one another, etc. No one will need to tell you these things because you will understand.)

3) You cannot understand Gods perfect will until your mind is renewed. Conversely, once your mind is renewed, you will begin to gain an understanding.

Well, what are the tools I need to renew my mind? The answer is the knowledge of God's Word.

So, put on the new man, not the first Adam (Colossians 3:10). I am saved through the word of God. Renewed through the knowledge of God's word. The diet of the believer is Jesus! Feed on the Word daily.

The only doctrine we have in the bible is Jesus (Hebrews 13:9). Jesus is our Grace. To be established with Grace is to be established in Christ, not material things. We shouldn't get excited over material things. If your spirit has not been fed, you will never feel joy (the lasting kind that is). If you want to discover your purpose, the only thing you need to fill your life is God's word.

If you don't understand God, the keys to the kingdom become irrelevant (Colossians 1:9). If you find keys on the ground but don't know who they belong to, you won't know what house they go to or where to go. But if you know the person they belong to then you will understand what they go to. Seek first the kingdom of God and everything else will come to you.

You can't be fruitful in every good work if your understanding is not being led (Colossians 1:10). If you miss church services regularly then you do not understand God. I am complete in Christ! (come on, say it with me!)

In 1 Corinthians 2:13 Paul was telling the church that he was feeding them spiritual things and that should be the purpose of the church. In other words, revealing Jesus. You must feed on Christ or you will get discouraged. You are built up by the word and only that will give you an inheritance. You are an image of Jesus. Don't let the enemy tell you otherwise. But you must be fed, daily. Grab your inheritance!

Presenter: Conversation between pastor and brother

Title: How Do I Go About a 21 Day Fast?

Notes:

With the 21 Days of fasting coming up, the brother had confused himself by searching the internet to find out how to go about a 21 day fast. There is a ton of conflicting opinions out there so he brought the questions before the pastor. Is it okay to eat seafood? Salt? Put lemon in your water to flavor it? And the list of contradictions went on.

The pastor and the brother turned to Daniel 10:2-3 and began to read. The pastor pointed out this was what one man did to go about fasting. It is not doctrine. Use this as a guideline. This is what worked for Daniel, and it may work for you too.

This is what the brother came up with on further thinking about the subject. God tells us to pray and fast. So that seems like clear doctrine. But how do we go about that? Well, there are many examples of fasting in the bible, but two common types of fasts are outlined by Esther and Daniel. In those books they tell us how they went about fasting. Esther fasted for 3 days with no food or drink. Now we know, with today's knowledge about the human anatomy that refraining from drinking water for three days is unhealthy. God wouldn't want us to do anything that would kill us or even harm us. Taking three days to eat nothing except the word of God and quench oneself on the gospel and a healthy dose of water would seem like it might be effective. As for Daniels fast, going without delicacies (including sugar and lard products we so enjoy) and meat, as well as refraining from drinking anything other than water seems like a good place to start. Beyond that it seems that it would be up to each individual to determine how they were going to go about there fast. Again there is no doctrine that tells us how to fast, only that we should do it. As for me, I think I will refrain from dairy products as they come from a cow which is meat. How about you? How are you going to go about it? Let's all fast and pray together but remain in good health, after all our bodies are supposed to be temples.
