Title: How to Ask Things in Prayer

Notes:

Recently, we have been discussing that the only way to exercise your faith is through prayer. But how do you go about asking things in prayer?

The first thing we need to understand is the nature of God. The nature of God is that he answers prayers.

If you lack wisdom, ask of the giving God (James 1:5). The nature of God is to give. If we are going to pray productively, we must know that we serve a giving God. He can give to unbelievers just as well as Christians. One thing we have to have in mind when we pray is that God is a giving God. Don't allow anything to remove that from your mind. He gives to all men liberally. He is not a partial God.

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:43-44). Even the heathens love those who love them. Love your enemies (Matthew 5:45-46). The nature of God is that He reaches out to the unbelievers for He is a giving God. Reach out and greet a stranger for even the heathens greet those who greet them (Matthew 5:47).

In Genesis 4:9-15, God was giving Cain an opportunity. Cain was worried some one was going to kill him and he brought it before God. So God put a mark on him to prevent anyone from killing him because God is a giving God and gives us what we ask for.

How can I ask things in prayer?

The word mountain, in Mark 11:23-24, is referring to challenges and hardships that come against you. Remove doubt from your heart. Whatever needs of life you have that you ask of God in prayer will be granted. In prayer, you are the one who determines what you need. God knows your needs, but you are the one who determines the need. You must bring your requests before God in prayer. When you pray, believe you will receive them and have a true desire, and you will receive them.

You are the one who determines your needs (Matthew 6:8). God already knows you have a need but you must bring your need before Him. Be specific in prayer. Don't tell God "you know my needs," rather specify them.

Just to be clear, God knows you have needs but you are the one who determines what needs are to be addressed (Mark 10:46-52). Jesus knew the beggar was blind but he wanted the man to specify his needs. We must let God know our needs.

In Matthew 6:31-32, Jesus was explaining that there is a difference between worrying (being anxious) and asking for things needed. You cannot be anxious of money and still believe in Christ. Don't panic when you ask God for something (Matthew 6:24-26). Don't be anxious. You just need to ask for those things you need. You cannot work by faith and worry also (Matthew 6:27-30). Our God is a giving God. Don't be anxious. Don't worry. Petition your needs before God.

Things. What things? Things could mean health, financial empowerment, clothes, food, shelter, transportation such as a car, etc.

Be careful for nothing (Philippians 4:6). In other words, do not fret or have anxiety about anything. You cannot worry and pray at the same time. In every circumstance you find yourself, bring your need of things before God. Do not worry. Worrying about things will destroy your faith. When you are anxious about something it will make you question your beliefs.

Ask God and He will give liberally without finding fault in you or your request (James 1:5). God will not find a fault in giving you your desires. God is not a dictator nor is he an unjust judge.

Anytime you are worried about your request it will bring you to a place of double mindedness. The problem isn't the giving God. The problem is the recipient. You need to request and believe in God. Our God is a giving God (James 1:6-7).

In prayer there is nothing wrong with repeating what you ask of the Lord. What Jesus was saying in Matthew 6:7 is that there was no faith in what they were asking for. There was talking without thinking. In prayer you ask something thoughtfully, asking from the heart. Jesus was referring to the vain repetitions like the heathens used in their prays "Oh God help me! Help me oh God! Oh God help me! Help me Oh God" for 30 minutes; this is not prayer - it is vain repetition. Think about your request. Ask thoughtfully and from the heart.

Ephesians 1:16 says "cease not" - this is what you are asking everyday. This is different than vain repetition. Jesus was talking about repeating your request. He was talking about thinking about what you are asking for.

Heathens used vain repetition to call on their deities (1 Kings 18:26-28). Our God is not on vacation and doesn't need to be awakened by repeatedly calling on Him. He is ready to answer your prayers. Aren't you glad you have Jesus to answer your prayers? You don't need to cut yourself to get an answer!

Lastly, have a reason for your prayers (1 Kings 18:36-39). Be specific before the Lord. Tell Him what you need. Don't be afraid to ask and don't doubt that you will receive answers to your request.
