Title: Culture of a Strong Church, a Culture of Prayer

Last week we talked about blessings that come from seeking the face of God. We discussed that the heroes of faith were able to change their destiny by seeking the face of God. You are the one who must deliberately make up your mind to seek God. One way we seek God is through prayer.

Today we are going to discuss the culture of a strong church. We are not talking about the physical building, rather we are talking about the people. Be with us as we cover this topic over the next couple of weeks.

First, what is culture? It is a way of thinking, or behaving, in a place. Most of us are familiar with the culture of the place we work. Your own personal culture can be eliminated when you enter into the kingdom of God.

Let's start this topic with the culture of prayer.

In Jeremiah 35:1-3 the culture was so strong that the Rechabites refused to drink wine even when tempted. We see in Jeremiah 35:18 that, because they obeyed the culture of their father, they were rewarded by God.

Whenever you have a problem you should pray (Isaiah 56:7). Prayer is supposed to be a way of life. It is a way of communicating with God. It is a way to get God to reveal secrets to you. A house of God should be a house of prayer. It shouldn't be that you pray just when you have a need, but at all times (Ephesians 6:18-19)

We should note here that your body is a house of God.

In Matthew 21:10-13 the temple had become a place of merchants. The temple is supposed to be a place of worship, a place of prayer, a place for God to reside. It is not supposed to be a den of thieves but this is what it had become. It shouldn't be a place for the money changers. It should be a place of communication with God. You were created to pray. Your body was created to praise God, to worship God, to pray to God. That means a child of God shouldn't have a problem praying.

When you live according to God's Word, things will go your way (1 Corinthians 3:16). You are meant to pray. You are meant to call upon God. Prayer should be your life (1 Corinthians 3:17). God's house should be a house of prayer. God will begin to speak through you when you pray.

People ought always to pray (Luke 18:1). We should be people in prayer. When you have a culture of prayer, God will reveal things to you.

The church should be a place of prayer (Acts 1:14). In prayer and supplication. The mother of Jesus was among those people who prayed. There is no chapter in Acts where you won't see people praying.

Acts 2:42 says they continue in prayer - constantly, diligently. God has called us to pray. If you can believe God, if you can pray, miracles will happen.

The characteristics of a strong church is a praying life (Acts 4:31). Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. Greatness is in us when we pray.

Acts 4:32 says they were of one heart and one soul. If we are a praying church, God will bring us together in one thought, into fellowship, to love one another. Pray together. Be a praying church. Be on fire for God.

We see in Acts 3:1 that miracles to place because the people set up their minds that they were going to praise God.

Make time for prayer. We often have time for leisure activities but don't make time for our spiritual enhancement. The people, as seen in Daniel 6:10, made time for prayer. Daniel had a specific time to pray. You make time to brush your teeth. You make time to do your laundry. You make time to watch television. You need to make time to pray. We're not talking about "Thank you God, Amen" but heartfelt devotion. It's amazing we have time for doctor appointments, we even schedule them using apps on our phones, but we can't schedule time to pray. If we are going to be a strong church, we have to have a culture of prayer. Prayer is not just a means to go into the presence of God. You are already in God's presence.

Acts 6:4 says we will give ourselves sometimes to prayers? No! Continually to prayer. Once a week? No! Continually to prayer.

If you really want to help someone, like the poor, teach them to pray. Preach the gospel to them.

If you want to be spiritually empowered, you need to give yourself to fasting and prayer (Acts 13:2-3). Our prayers bring forth the supernatural. God will speak to you when you pray. Direction is given to you when you pray. A Christian shouldn't be confused. If you are confused about directions in life then you aren't spending enough time in prayer. God will give you direction.

Prayer is the life of the church. Paul was arrested and not eating or drinking (Acts 9:9). You may misconstrue this and think that the reason he wasn't eating or drinking was because he was depressed. Not so! He was praying! For three days he was not eating or drinking - he was praying. For three days he was praying!

When you are a man or women of prayer you cannot be deceived by any seductive spirit (Acts 16:16-18). If you can pray, you can't be deceived because your spiritual eyes are open. God is going to open your eyes. A praying man or woman has authority over demonic spirits.

Ephesians 6:18-19 says praying sometimes? No! praying always! Knock out the idea that the only people who pray are people in trouble. That is misinformation from the enemy. Pray always. Pray in good times as well as bad. Paul understood the mindset of God. We should be a house of prayer. We should be a praying home. Paul was trying to tell the people the importance of prayer. The more you pray the more that the mysteries of the gospel will be revealed to you.

Make the culture in our church one of prayer. Make the culture in your home be one of prayer. Teach your children to pray.
