Title: When did the old covenant end and the new covenant begin?

If you are going to be trained in God, you need to follow the principles of the word.

The New Testament Didn't Start with Matthew 1.

Luke 22:20 is telling us that the new testament didn't begin in Matthew chapter 1; it began when Jesus went to the cross and died for us. Likewise the old testament didn't start in Genesis; it began in Exodus. The law was given in Exodus; this is when God entered into a covenant with the people of Israel.

The old testament couldn't help the people of the church (Romans 3:20). The old covenant couldn't save us. No man can be justified by the deeds of the law. In the time of the old covenant God overlooked the sins when blood sacrifices were made. By the law is the knowledge of sin. The law just gives us an understanding of sin; it doesn't save us.

Why do we have the new covenant?

Hebrews 9:16 means that the new testament began after the death of Jesus. The early chapters in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John give us historical background of what happened when Christ was here, but occur before the new covenant.

Let's discuss Matthew 16:13-18 for a bit. This was a conversation between Jesus and his disciple, Jesus wanted to know who people were saying he was. People had the wrong conception about Jesus. Anytime you have the wrong conception about Christ, it will misguide you in the way you treat Him and in the way you love Him.

Jesus said He will build the church (Matthew 16:18). The church didn't exist yet because the new covenant didn't exist yet. The old covenant ended when Christ died. John the Baptist was not the end of the old testament. Everything in the old testament pointed us to Jesus. You need to understand the identity of who you are serving . You cannot know your own identity until you know who you are serving (see our meeting notes "The Identity of Believers"). If you don't know the revelation of Jesus you will find it difficult when the devil comes.

Everything in the old testament pointed us to Jesus. The totality of God is in Christ (Colossians 2:9). Christ has made every requirement for your freedom. Because you are in Christ you are complete. You are at a new level. Your identity is not defined by what people say about you or by the car you drive.

Because of the death of Christ, the act of circumcision is not the same as it was in the old testament. Women were not included in the old way. With the new circumcision all people, men and women alike, are included. The new circumcision is that we are buried with Christ in baptism. The wages of sin is death. Let no man judge you. If you are circumcised through baptism, then no man should judge you based on the old covenant. For the old covenant to be perfect we need the new covenant. The old covenant only benefited the children of Israel but the new covenant benefits everyone.

"I am glad I have Jesus! I am not afraid of the enemy because I have Jesus!" (come on say it with us!)

Going to Israel will not save you. It might be a nice vacation but it is not a requirement to be saved (Genesis 12:1-4).

Let's focus on Hebrews 2:14-16 briefly. The seed of Abraham - In thee (Abraham) the family of nations will be blessed. The new covenant was given to us to help us overcome sin. Through Christ all men are justified. In the new covenant you have the ability to overcome sin through Christ.

Some people say the old and new covenant overlap and that both still exist. But this is not the case; the old covenant has been dealt with. Jesus was the fulfillment of the old covenant. The old covenant vanished away (Hebrews 8:13). The curtain was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51) telling us the old covenant was torn away. The cross changed everything because that is where Jesus established the new covenant.

John 19:30 is the end of the old covenant when Jesus "gave up his ghost."

Lastly let's discuss Colossians 2:6-8. You have received Christ, you have received the new covenant, now you need to walk in Him. Don't just talk about it - be rooted in it, live it, be strong in it. One thing that allows us to be strong in the Lord is the knowledge of the new testament. If you are rooted in the new testament, the next thing you need is to be built up in the faith. If you are not careful you will begin to doubt your faith in this modern world of technology. There are so many false teachings on TV and on the internet. We can't let the the things around us affect our faith. You will be misled if you don't understand the God you are following.

So, be established in your faith. Your knowledge must be sound (see The Importance of Learning). You need the proper knowledge to grow. For you to grow and be established in the faith you must be taught, it won't come be wishful thinking. Don't allow anyone to give you false teachings or to give you false doctrines (see our notes from 01/15/2017). The Word of God is the sword you need to win your battles. The only thing that is going to make you wise is your understanding of the word.

The new testament is important because it is what gives us the ability to be reconciled to God. It is through the new testament that all of our sins are forgiven. Not overlooked, but forgiven.

Study the Word Daily. Sharpen your knowledge in the Word so that it is a sharp sword. Use that sword to fight off the enemy,
