Title: How to Follow the spirit of God

Notes:

No one can become productive in life if they don't follow the instructions from God.

in·struc·tion

inˈstrəkSH(ə)n/

noun

1. a direction or order.

"he issued instructions to the sheriff"

synonyms: order, command, directive, direction, decree, edict, injunction, mandate, dictate, commandment, bidding;

2. detailed information telling how something should be done, operated, or assembled.

"always study the instructions supplied"

synonyms: directions, key, rubric, specification, how-tos; handbook, manual, guide, tutorial

read the instructions

We all need instruction. Instruction means given direction or order; it is detailed information on how something should be done; teaching. Even electronic appliances come with instructions with a clear label from the manufacturer instructing that the manual should be read before operating the appliance. Why? The manufacturer wants the equipment used correctly to save money for both the purchaser and the manufacturer and to increase the lifetime of the product. Our lives are like appliances. And the bible is our manual for survival, for making the product (ourselves) last into eternity.

In 1 Samuel 3:7 the scriptures are letting us know that Samuel has not come to knowledge of things of the Spirit yet. There's an aspect of God that Samuel did not know at that point. He has been in the temples but didn't know God. He needed someone to give him instruction. Instruction is important if we are to understand what is happening around us (1 Samuel 3:8). 1 Samuel 3:9 is where the instruction from his pastor, Eli, comes in. Eli gave Samuel instructions on how to hear from the Lord.

Instruction unveils the very best of God to us. Whenever you lay down your heart and determine that you are going to follow God, you open yourself to understanding.

2 Kings 5:1-5, 8-14 tells us about a leper whom God was able to bring healing to because the leper followed instruction. It was a maid who gave him instruction (2 Kings 5:3) because she had faith and knowledge. Sometimes God will use a child to give you instruction that will improve your life. But you have to be open to instruction and willing to learn.

This leper was a wealthy man and he thought he could buy his healing (2 Kings 5:5). But in the end, it was because he followed instructions that he was able to receive healing. His second set of instructions was to wash in the Jordan (2 Kings 5:10). How many of us really like to follow instructions? Do you toss away the instruction manual and go straight to operating your new equipment? The leper didn't want to follow instructions either. We have problems following instructions because we have our own idea of how things should be done. We get upset when the instructions are counter to the way we believe things should be done. We must learn to follow instructions. The leper had his own ideas on how things should go; he had his own agenda. But if you are going to follow God, you must let go of your own ideas. Even if the instructions of God seem silly. We have to remember He has His own way of doing things and knows what is best for us.

The leper didn't think Elisha's instructions made any sense (2 Kings 5:12). The Jordan was not a clean river. Look at your life. Has there been some area God has been giving you direction that you refuse to listen to? Are you refusing to listen because the directions don't seem to make sense to you?

The instructions for the leper weren't over yet. He received yet another instruction in 2 Kings 5:13. God knew his life was tied to instructions. We need to learn to give in to instruction. We need to listen to instruction to become something in life. Any time you follow instruction your life will be better (2 Kings 5:14). Your life will be secured when you can learn to take instruction. God will begin to minister to you when you decide you will follow instruction in the Word of God. There was no healing power in the water for the leper. The healing power was in following the instruction given to him.

Even Jesus found it important to talk about this leper (Luke 4:27) because he followed instruction. Many lepers were not clean because they didn't follow instruction. Jesus was stressing the importance of following instructions.

Let's go back to 1 Samuel 3:9-11. Samuel followed instruction and went and laid down in his place. Because he followed instruction given to him by his pastor, he was able to hear the voice of God. Your spiritual growth is tied to being able to follow instruction (1 Samuel 3:19). Nobody grows outside of following instructions. Even the president of the United States has someone to instruct him. And he must follow those instructions if he wants to be a better leader.

Our spiritual growth is tied to hearing the voice of God and following the instructions He gives us. Nobody becomes productive in life outside of instructions. You don't become a doctor by waking up in the morning and stating I am going to be a doctor today! It takes instruction, and it takes time. You can't pass your driver's test if you refuse to read the manual. You might think you know all of the answers, but very few of us are born prodigies. Instruction is very important for growth.

Learn how to follow instruction.

Samuel wasn't born a prophet (1 Samuel 3:20); only Jeremiah was born a prophet. Samuel was established as a prophet. Established meaning that it didn't just happen. He was trained. He became a prophet by following the instructions of the leaders he was under.

It was Samuel's choice to serve (1 Samuel 2:18), but, again, he wasn't born a prophet. It was his willingness to learn, to follow instructions, that led him to becoming a prophet. He trained himself by following instructions of his pastor, Eli (1 Samuel 2:11). Anyone that follows instruction has an attitude of servitude. Samuel wanted to serve (1 Samuel 3:1). Those that seek to serve are assets to the church.

Another example of a person who understood what it meant to serve and take instruction was the centurion in Matthew 8:5-9. Centurions were powerful men in the Roman empire. But this centurion was concerned about his servant's welfare. He understood what it meant to serve. Verse 9 gives us a history of this centurion. The secret of this man was that he was under authority and he took instruction from those over him.

You cannot enjoy the supernatural until you learn to follow instruction. Instruction prepares you for what God has for you. Nobody who follows the law ends up in prison.

Instruction is very important. Without it you can't grow.

You do want to grow don't you?

Suggestion for the week: reread Acts of Apostles. Paul is an amazing prophet and we can all learn from his instruction. Reread Acts and see what God wants to reveal to you.
